Root canal therapy is required when the tooth's pulp becomes infected through damage or decay and is one of the services offered at FADC Dental Group. Failure to treat an infected tooth can lead to an abscess, severe pain and the tooth having to be removed.
The initial phase of treatment will see the dentist examine your teeth and gums to establish the extent of infection and locate the injured tooth. Any decay will be removed at this stage, and the tooth prepped for phase two, with a temporary filling placed over the tooth until the next appointment. Much of the nerve will also be removed at this stage for your comfort.
At the second appointment, usually, 7 to 10 days later, we'll anaesthetise the tooth and take X-rays to establish the root length and determine how many root canal spaces need to be cleaned. After cleaning, any remaining nerve tissue will be removed with the area sanitised and an appointment made for eight to 10 days.
The final stage will involve removing the temporary filling for good and filling the root space with the required material. The tooth will then be covered with a crown to prevent further damage to the structure.
