Worn down teeth can be caused by many factors, including bruxism. Bruxism or teeth grinding is a common problem for many patients and can cause headaches, facial muscle soreness, and neck and shoulder pain. At FADC Dental Group, we offer treatment for this condition, which occurs unconsciously during sleep and in times of stress. It can further result from jaw misalignment, which can also be a symptom.
Often reported by a partner and then diagnosed by a dentist, bruxism can severely damage teeth if left untended - dislodging fillings or cracking or chipping tooth enamel. As a result, tooth restoration work will then be required.
Other contributing factors to the premature wearing down of teeth include excessive intake of acids in either drinks or food and general wear and tear through ageing.
Treatment for bruxism will alter depending on the underlying cause and may involve using relaxation techniques for your tongue, jaw and lips if caused by stress or anxiety. A night guard can also be worn to alleviate the damage caused by grinding, or on rare occasions, a muscle relaxant can be prescribed
